WHERE DOES THE TIME GO? The arrival of this issue marks the one-year milestone of Connected . The concept behind Connected magazine was to give a voice to Kirby Risk through articles about industry related information and trends while highlighting the products and services we offer our customers. What was created in the process went above and beyond my expectations. Connected has become a valuable resource that speaks not only to our customers but to our industry peers, manufacturing partners and employees alike. As I read through this issue, I see an emerging theme around relationships. The value of relationships is important as we engage in more digital and automated processes. Like all of Kirby Risk’s values and principles, relationships are a pillar to our success as a company. It’s not just customer relationships either. It’s building a complete circle and connecting customers, employees, manufacturing partners and community. Those relationships are what sets us apart in the industry.

I’d like to thank you for being a valued customer and business partner. With 2023 on the horizon, we hope you will choose Kirby Risk as your preferred distributor.

DID YOU KNOW?

DISTRIBUTION CENTER ADDRESSES SUPPLY CHAIN DEMANDS The Distribution Center is a 65,000-square-foot building located in Indianapolis. It’s more than just a shipping hub, it’s the heart of our operations. Our Distribution Center can single-handily provide products to all our customers and is a centralized resource for all Kirby Risk branches. NORMAL OPERATIONS Our Distribution Center processes, stores and ships nearly 90,000 top-quality products from more than 2,000 manufacturers. When an order is received, a team member will begin to fill the order by pulling the requested products then scan each item’s bar code with an RF scanner. This scanning system allows for our inventory to be ‘live’ and product availability will update automatically after the item has been scanned. Our system performs nearly 350 digital inventory cycle counts each day and mitigates the need for physical inventory checks. After items have been pulled, scanned and are ready for shipment, our own fleet of trucks and experienced drivers begin to make their nightly deliveries to all of our branch locations. This allows our customers to receive products the next day, and in some cases, same day shipping for emergency outage situations. NOT-SO NORMAL OPERATIONS Our Distribution Center was faced with a global problem that every business has experienced recently — supply chain issues. In past issues of Connected , we discussed how supply chain shortages have drastically impacted the industry, including how we were able to meet customer demands. As products became harder to obtain, communication became vital in maintaining our relationships with our customers. The Distribution Center team began to meet weekly with the Kirby Risk Operations team to solidify plans for completing customer orders with the level of inventory and incoming shipments. “By now, we have all dealt with supply chain issues. You see it at grocery stores and almost everywhere you go,” says Janette Woodside, Kirby Risk Distribution Center Operations Manager. “Our customers have been extremely patient, and they know we will do everything we can to get products on the shelf.”

The Kirby Risk Distribution Center quickly provides our customers with wire, conduit, cable trays, electrical receptacles, lighting and much more.

“We were struggling to get in vendor products,” Woodside continues. “Our backorders were nearing thousands and product deliveries would only range in the low hundreds or even less in some cases. This took intense strategic planning and communication between the sales team and Distribution Center to get supplies to customers based on timeline and critical needs.” A TEAM EFFORT During this time, management implemented a unique scheduling system to avoid overworked employees and to ensure customers were receiving orders as quickly as possible. The team of nearly 60 employees began creating their own schedules based on shift preferences, personal lives and outside commitments. This led to employees being allocated more evenly throughout shifts and resulted in a significant decrease in the need for temporary workers, overtime hours and employee turnover. To further support the distribution team, other team members came from surrounding branches to assist wherever needed.

“We are all working for the customer, not ourselves. This team has really gone above and beyond,” comments Woodside.

Our Distribution Center is committed to providing customers with the right products and services — at the right time. Although supply chain issues are now common, our team always finds a way to Make It Happen!

We provide accurate, consistent and high-quality electrical supply products and services. We specialize in next day demand that not only meets your requirements — but exceeds them. Connect with a Kirby Risk Account Manager today to learn more!

ACCOUNT MANAGER SPOTLIGHT

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO AS AN ACCOUNT MANAGER? I educate myself on the industry, products and services so I can offer the best solutions to my customers. Being an Account Manager is about more than sales. It’s important to build relationships with the customer. You really need to know the customer — know their pain points, know what keeps them up at night and know how to make themmore money so they are profitable. I work for my customer, so I am always trying to find the best solution for them and not just a sale. Q: WHAT TYPES OF CUSTOMERS DO YOU WORK WITH? I am an Industrial Account Manager, so my customers are in the production and manufacturing sector. They are usually in plants and warehouses. I do have a few contractor and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers. Q: CAN YOU SHARE A CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY WITH US? I had a customer that did not have a good handle on the automation products that they had in their facility. As a result, downtime was costing them a lot because they didn’t have the right product on the shelf, and they had to call me after hours to find the right product and get a courier to send it over as soon as possible. There was one product that had a four-week lead time if it wasn’t in stock when the customer needed it. The customer couldn’t afford that amount of downtime. I saw the problem and talked to the customer about a parts management process and worked through finding the right solution to alleviate unnecessary downtime. It took a year and a half to create the process and put a parts management program in place for the material. Within three weeks of having the process in place, a 600HP drive went down but the part was available in the customer’s warehouse. It was a Saturday, but the customer had themselves up and running in four hours. Without that parts management process in place, the customer would have to call me to source the part, then get a courier to deliver the part. That four hours would have cost the customer more than 12 hours of downtime. The parts management program saved what it would have cost in downtime. That savings paid for the entire parts management program for five years. Now that they have a parts management process, despite the supply chain crisis, they have the critical spare parts onsite so they don’t have to worry about them being readily available.

PAUL FLECK, ACCOUNT MANAGER In this edition of Connected , we spotlight Paul Fleck to talk about the role of an Industrial Account Manager and the importance of the customer relationship. An Account Manager is a sales professional that is responsible for the development, management and growth of sales and relationships with a set of customer accounts.

How Farbest Foods Became the First to Try ABB’s New TyRap ® TyGenic ™ Cable Ties

CONNECTED | FALL 2022 11

R elationships —We value and invest in mutually satisfying relationships and treat our team members, customers and supplier partners with respect and dignity and we value their contributions.

It’s not every day you can give your customer the opportunity to be first to try out what could be a game-changing new product. When ABB needed a facility to film and photograph their new Ty-Rap® in use, they reached out to Kirby Risk. ABB Installation Products was in the process of launching its new Ty-Rap® TyGenic™ antimicrobial detectable cable tie. The cable tie is molded from an FDA compliant proprietary nylon resin blend that contains both an EPA-registered antimicrobial additive and detectable particles. The antimicrobial additive is effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including various bacteria, viruses, protozoans and fungi, such as mold and mildew, according to ABB. A regular cable tie has notches and

grooves where microorganisms collect and reproduce. “The TyGenic™ cable ties are the first antimicrobial and detectable two-piece cable tie available in the market today,” says Brian Barr, Market Development Manager F&B for ABB. For years ABB had two separate offerings: a one piece antimicrobial cable tie and a traditional detectable cable tie. After receiving feedback from the food and beverage industry that a single cable tie with detectability and antimicrobial performance features was needed, ABB put its engineers to work resulting in the TyGenic™ cable tie.

tie in use to include in marketing and sales materials. Because the TyGenic™ Ty-Raps® are specifically designed to support food and beverage applications, ABB wanted a distributor engaged with the food and beverage industry. “We had initially reached out to a couple of strong food and beverage focused distributors across the country,” says Barr. “Kirby Risk was the first distributor to connect us with a willing plant location. All the requests were sent at the same time, and Kirby Risk immediately jumped at the chance to get us connected with a food and beverage facility for the new Ty-Rap® TyGenic™.” Paul Fleck, Industrial Account Manager for Kirby Risk Electrical Supply, knew just what customer to ask. “I thought maybe

As part of the launch, ABB needed photos and video of the TyGenic™ cable

turnkey processing facilities would be the best,” says Fleck. “Farbest was a likely candidate.” He reached out to Farbest and explained that ABB was looking for a company to participate in a photoshoot. Initially, there wasn’t a lot of information other than Farbest would be the first to use the product in exchange for their participation. “I told them they would get free samples to use and be the first to try the product,” says Fleck. “They were very open to trying it because it would help better their processes.” Farbest Foods, Inc. is headquartered in Jasper, Indiana. It supplies raw, fresh and frozen turkey products to top-brand, further processors located throughout the United States and around the globe, according to the Farbest website.

Cable ties are used as cable management on the processing line. The production line has different cables that run down for sensors. These cables and cords need to be out of the way of the items in production. Cable ties are also used to mount signage in a facility. “In food and beverage processing, it’s important that these are metal because everything has to go through a metal detector to make sure there is no metal in the meat or on the system,” says Fleck. Eric Gladish, Director of Maintenance and Refrigeration for Farbest Foods, oversees facility and maintenance at the Vincennes and Huntingburg plants. Each plant has roughly 35 employees in the maintenance and refrigeration department. Gladish and his team oversee maintenance of all

processing equipment across the facilities. He has worked with Fleck as a customer at Farbest for 10 years and even previously with a different employer. “Any time we can look at improving food safety or product quality, we are going to be interested,” says Gladish. “Being in the food industry, that is our number one goal other than employee safety.” When offered the opportunity to try something new like the TyGenic™ cable tie, Gladish felt there was limited potential of risk to try something new. “The metal detectable quality of the Ty-Rap® is extremely important, but the added antimicrobial feature is obviously intriguing,” he says. “If for some reason this does get in the product,

CONNECTED | FALL 2022 13

the antimicrobial feature is nice when it holds true. We will be testing the product on our own to prove what this product says it will do.” As an added benefit, ABB is doing a free Plant Electrical Safety Assessment (PESA) for Farbest. The Plant Electrical System Assessment is a 100 percent confidential no-cost consultation process. ABB comes into a facility to discuss pain points and current issues then assesses the facility’s electrical system from the beginning of the process to the end. The primary focus is on the cable protection and wire management in the plant. “We have found that 50 percent of the issues inside of a food and beverage processing facility can be tied directly to using the incorrect product for applications,” says Barr. “The entire purpose of the assessment is to help improve the facility’s overall operations, extend the life of the electrical system, reduce downtime and change over time, increase food safety and provide a safer workplace for their employees.” This unique opportunity for Farbest was the direct result of a strong relationship between customer and account manager. It’s a relationship that Gladish says is responsive and easy. “The biggest thing of

all is the support — I don’t have to work hard to get it,” he says. “Paul goes above and beyond.” “Getting a chance to meet with the manufacturer directly is uncommon,” says Gladish. “Whether it’s ABB or another manufacturer — any new contacts or sources that can be used in the plant are always welcome. It all comes down to contacts and resources, and as a large industrial facility, any time we can connect with our suppliers and gain information, knowledge and other cost saving ideas, we are certainly not going to say no.” ABB is different than many manufacturers. “We will frequently interact with distributors’ customers as part of the plant electrical system assessments and product development process,” says Barr. “It is an important relationship because it gives us a better understanding of food and beverage pain points, applications and specific needs, so we can develop new and innovative product solutions solving key issues that will go across all food and beverage processing.” Forging relationships with distributor customers also allows ABB a continued source of feedback at each step of the development process, which helps identify needs for additional products

and services to help ensure success for customers.

For Fleck, the relationship is about being a solution provider. “We’re not just here to sell them products but to try and find solutions to a process that make it safer. Recalls cost millions of dollars” says Fleck. “This is just one small way to prevent bacteria growth. No one else is going to bring a customer the solutions that we do, and this is because of the relationships we have with our vendors.” At Kirby Risk, relationships with vendor partners are just as important as relationships with customers. “Anyone can sell stuff,” says Fleck. “But people buy from people that they trust, and you won’t get that from one of our competitors.” Kirby Risk has been working with ABB throughout 2022 to be a resource for food and beverage product solutions. We want to bring manufacturers and customers together to ensure we are offering the very best solutions to fit their needs.

the system. “We know where every item is for every project. It is scanned when it goes through receiving,” says Jessica Scheid, Operations Manager – Distribution Services. “We can view every project and run reports that pull data for every light fixture for every customer in the building. It ensures quality on our end.” Lighting material is stored at the Kirby Risk Commodities Center located in Indianapolis. Account and Project Managers work with the customer to determine what product materials are needed. The customer then purchases everything up front for the project. The product belongs to the customer, but it is held for the duration of the project by Kirby Risk. STAGING CARTS SAVE TIME AND INCREASE EFFICIENCY The Commodities Center team works with the Project Manager to release product as needed to a jobsite. When staging carts are added to a project, organizing and labeling is taken up a notch. The Project Manager works with the customer to determine how the carts will be used for their specific project needs. That information is passed to the Commodities Center team who stages and labels the needed materials.

Jobsites can be hectic and withmany workers coming and going, project materials are at risk if left unsecured or stored improperly. How can you ensure project lighting materials don’t get lost, stolen or damaged while on a jobsite? Purchasing a facility to store and stage material may not be a feasible option. That’s why Kirby Risk developed the Project Storage Program — a safe, secure and affordable solution for storing project lighting materials. HOW DOES IT WORK? The Kirby Risk Project Storage Program allows for storage, staging and quick delivery of lighting products directly to a jobsite when needed. The team takes care of busy work and eliminates unnecessary jobsite waste by unboxing material and placing products on rolling staging carts. These carts are labeled with a specific location on a jobsite where the materials will be used. Once a project is established, the system creates a barcode tied to that project along with a part ID. This labeling system allows all materials related to a project to be tracked through

Julie Anderson, Project Manager at Electric Plus in Bloomington, Indiana praises the staging carts. “If we were working in room 100 and needed five of one type of fixture and six of another, the carts would be tagged with the floor, room and light fixture type,” she says. “It was so easy. We often use apprentices, so it was self-explanatory for them.” Almost as quickly as the carts were delivered and product installed, Kirby Risk would pick them up while dropping off the next load. “We got a routine going. We got to know the (Kirby Risk) drivers. They would call our foreman when they were on the way,” she says. Her team liked the organization and ease of mobility the carts offered. “Sometimes on a jobsite, you spend so much time moving pallets around on a pallet jack because they are always in someone’s way.” Anderson also highlighted the time savings that storage and staging carts offered. Previously, Electric Plus would have to find a way to store the fixtures. Someone would have to get the fixtures and bring them to the jobsite. Anderson explained that can be a problem because light fixtures can easily be damaged on the jobsite. Once on the jobsite, the lights must be unpackaged and taken to the proper location. “Sometimes we would have 10 lights and it would take 15 minutes to unbox one fixture,” says Anderson. “And sometimes that fixture would be broken.” LESS WASTE MORE HASTE Because fixtures are unpacked and prepped prior to their arrival on a jobsite, Kirby Risk can catch any damaged fixtures and get replacements before they ever get to the customer. The customer also doesn’t have to deal with the surplus of cardboard and garbage produced by packaging. That was a big plus for Anderson. “Jessica did an awesome job. It was a well-oiled machine,” says Anderson. “She would call and check in. Her team always wanted to know how they could make the process better. I appreciated that and was impressed.” Anderson received real-time reporting so her team was able to track when inventory was on the way. The Commodities team even sent pictures of the product in a secure and insured location so Electric Plus could invoice their customer.

The Project Storage Program has added toting and wire cage carts as additional options for customers to utilize. This allows for easy storage and organization of demos and controls. Right now, the program is mostly utilized for lighting and small related product. Scheid says the Commodities Center is looking for solution options to expand the abilities of the storage program for their customers. Anderson says she would be interested in expanded options in the future. “We had a very good experience. Jessica and her team really cared. That means a lot. They didn’t just sell a job and roll down the road.”

ROCKWELL AUTOMATION

IDENTIFYING AND ANALYZING POWER QUALITY ISSUES Has your facility recently experienced brownouts, power blips, voltage sags or swells? Have you been repeatedly replacing the same electronic components? Have you experienced unexplained machine shutdowns? If you answered yes to any of these questions, irregularities in your facility’s power quality are likely the hidden source of these unplanned and aggravating events. According to Rockwell Automation, 70% of unexplained downtime is caused by power quality problems. Poor power quality can negatively impact the performance and life-expectancy of electronic components used in your facility’s process applications. This causes downtime and increases overall costs for your facility. The first step in addressing power quality issues is to identify and analyze how power quality is affecting your production and control equipment. While some power quality issues are evident, like flickering lights or brownouts that cause a reduction in voltage for minutes or hours, other incidents happen so quickly they may go undetected. These events may

include voltage sags or swells, harmonic distortions, transients and more. Some power quality events are caused by outside sources like severe weather or a neighboring facility pushing energy back onto the electrical grid then causing a ripple that hits your facility. Others are caused by new or existing equipment within your facility or at your local utility company. Whatever the cause, these less noticeable events can cause dysfunction in your processes and harm electrical components. According to Brock Walker, Automation Consultant with Kirby Risk Electrical Supply, the power quality events that go unseen can wreak the most havoc. Without some type of power monitoring system, most facilities really have no idea how poor power quality is affecting their internal processes. Unfortunately, poor power quality is often evident in areas where industrial growth is booming due to increased demand. Coupled with the increased use of more sensitive electronic equipment in industrial facilities, power quality events are on the rise. Walker says if customers are seeing electrical components short out, trip or have a shortened life span, the need for monitoring incoming power is critical. “Every time there is a power ripple, whether it is a voltage sag, which means they are losing voltage, or if it is a voltage spike, which means they have too much, it is essentially beating those components up.

20 CONNECTED | FALL 2022

ROCKWELL AUTOMATION

Let’s say a drive or a VFD is supposed to last 25 years. If you’re putting that on poor power, now that VFD may last half its life.” He recommends installing the i-Sense® Voltage Monitor from Allen-Bradley® to track voltage-based power events. WHY THE I-SENSE ® VOLTAGE MONITOR MAKES SENSE The i-Sense® Voltage Monitor from Allen-Bradley® is an essential tool in monitoring incoming power quality. Once installed, i-Sense® technology uncovers vital data about voltage-based power events. This data is then transmitted to the i-Grid® server through a cloud-based application via Ethernet or modem. Here, the event data is collected, analyzed, correlated and sent back to the i-Grid® subscriber through text or email event notifications within a matter of minutes. Now, with power quality data and reports at hand showing the cause of your power quality event, you have a basis to take swift and targeted action to get your facility up and running again with minimum downtime. This data can help you determine a mitigation strategy to help you evade the consequences of these power quality issues. KEY BENEFITS OF THE I-SENSE ® VOLTAGE MONITOR (from Rockwell Automation Bulletin 1608 Power Quality Products) Diagnose Downtime Quickly Power quality issues are a frequent cause of downtime and are difficult to diagnose without monitoring in place Instant notification via text or email when an event occurs Cost-effective, Permanent Monitoring Solution Permanent monitoring is more effective than temporary solutions at diagnosing random power quality events Easy-to-use Web-based Application Access complete event information and history from any internet-connected browser No software to install, configure or maintain Voltage Event Tracking Documents the most common source of disruptive dirty power events in utility feeds

Multiple Configurations Within Single Unit 26 voltages between 100-480VAC Modem or Ethernet connectivity 50/60 Hz auto-sensing To prevent the consequences of power quality issues, proving that issues do exist is

key to determining if mitigation steps are needed, says Walker. According to most customers’ sustainability plans, obtaining better energy efficiency while preserving component life is a goal over the next two to four years. Installing voltage monitors such as the i-Sense® can help customers achieve this goal by pinpointing power quality disturbances and determining their root cause to take next steps to eliminate their effects on machines and processes. Case in point, Walker says Kirby Risk has a customer located in an industrial park northwest of Indianapolis that recently installed the i-Sense® Voltage Monitor. Within the last 10 months, this customer has logged 186 power quality events with the voltage monitor system. Each of these events, whether big or small, can potentially cause damage to electrical components. As a result, this customer installed the DySC® Voltage Sag Protector, a nearly maintenance-free mitigation solution that protects against voltage sags and brief interruptions that cause a majority of downtime and equipment/component damage in a facility. (Learn more about mitigation solutions in the Winter 2023 Connected Magazine.)

STAY AHEAD OF SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES

DAVE HEAVILAND | Vice President of Marketing JOSH ABEBE | Director Industrial Sales

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the electrical supply and distribution industry, along with many others, has been strongly affected by continued supply chain disruptions leading to shifts in demand, labor shortages and lengthy shipping times.

The economic impact can be felt at every level of the supply chain with the trickle down resulting in price increases and material shortages. Strong consumer demand has also led to inflation and further increases in the cost of raw materials, supplies and finished goods. These ongoing disruptions have added another layer of complexity to the budgeting and planning process for many businesses as they prepare for 2023 and the challenges that lie ahead. Ivalua, a leading global spend management cloud provider, surveyed 233 senior procurement executives from

leading manufacturing companies in the US and UK about their strategic plans for optimizing sourcing and supply chain processes. Forty-four percent of those surveyed expect the supply chain crisis to ease by the end of 2023. Only 18 percent expect the supply chain crisis to ease by the end of 2022. In an effort to better understand the trends, Kirby Risk meets with key manufacturers on a regular basis to discuss the current and future state of the supply chain. Their hypothesis on the outlook for 2023 relies on customer demand. Because demand has not yet slowed, the strain on raw materials will

continue, and we will see continued supply chain disruptions and increasing production costs leading to more price increases. Kirby Risk has learned that some manufacturers predict this volatility could continue into 2024. Switchgear, automation products and fusing, alongside products that contain high levels of steel, copper and resins will likely continue to be impacted until demand slows or manufacturing capacity improves. MEET SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES HEAD-ON As companies begin their 2023 budget and planning process, they need to prepare for supply chain challenges and learn how to implement or leverage strategies designed to minimize or alleviate ongoing inventory issues.
