SUMMER 2023 NEWSLETTER VISION 2025: RAISING THE BAR The role of community colleges in the economic vitality of Southeast Michigan has never been greater. It is core to the mission of Detroit Drives Degrees Community College Collaborative (D3C3) (see article page 2). Thanks to the recent $4.4M D3C3 grant and the generosity of donors like you, Schoolcraft’s first comprehensive campaign has already exceeded expectations. Given that performance, in May, the Schoolcraft Foundation Board voted unanimously to raise the Vision 2025 goal from $10M to $18M by 2025. When we started the five-year Vision 2025 fundraising campaign, we set our goal based on a feasibility study that provided data and feedback. We identified priorities in Student Success, Workforce Development, and Schoolcraft as a Community Hub. This D3C3 funding will allow the College to do even more to transform the student experience and help train today’s workforce to meet employment gaps, particularly in the healthcare and mobility sectors. It also allows us to meet the growing student needs like mental health and academic support services to ensure success in the classroom and life. Because of donors like you, we can be responsive to students’ needs through scholarships, special programs, innovative learning spaces, and much more! With your support, we can make significant investments that impact students and help them achieve their educational goals. As part of D3C3, Schoolcraft College and six other community college partners are executing plans to create systemic change that increases equitable access and enrollment for high school students and aligns academic programs to promising career paths. The community college partners are also developing regional strategies to collectively address inequitable systems. Schoolcraft College has been awarded $4.4 million in grant funds for the program. Schoolcraft will invest funds in three key areas: an Employer-led Mobility Strategy, K-12 Alignment, and Student Success. Education is the key to upward socioeconomic mobility and needs to be available and supported regardless of gender, race, income level, or age. Schoolcraft’s transformational D3C3 work will identify and remove barriers to higher education and career advancement. Schoolcraft’s goal is to increase college applications from K-12 schools through outreach efforts and to increase the racial diversity and percentage of applicants from low-income families. This funding will allow the College to expand outreach, strengthen relationships with area schools, and expand outreach to 8th through 12th graders. Schoolcraft also continues to advocate for statewide policy changes in funding for dual enrollment. A significant goal for D3C3 is to increase the State of Michigan’s postsecondary attainment rate to 60% and cut the racial equity educational attainment gap by half. Schoolcraft is committed to educating the talent required for Michigan to be the mobility industry leader. To achieve that, the College will partner with mobility stakeholders to design and implement new, relevant programs in Automotive Electronics. Schoolcraft can create programs that prepare students to go directly from the classroom to a career through these partnerships. The College has successfully done this in other sectors, including partnering with Trinity Health to address critical staffing shortages impacting healthcare providers. The support will also help Schoolcraft expand its Student Success model. The model brings together student services, academics, and enrollment services to help ensure every student has an individual pathway. As part of D3C3, Schoolcraft participated in Georgia State University’s National Institute for Student Success (NISS). NISS provided a guidebook specific to Schoolcraft to offer guidance to address institutional barriers for students, particularly underserved populations, and non-traditional-aged students.

The NISS Guidebook will lead future efforts and investments to improve student outcomes. “Students facing barriers to degree attainment deserve access to family-sustaining careers,” said Kylee Mitchell Wells, Ballmer Group’s Southeast Michigan Executive Director. “This partnership is designed to open new doors and create smoother pathways from education to career success, closing equity gaps across our Region.” “ Community colleges are Southeast Michigan’s largest and arguably most important talent development asset. SCHOOLCRAFT COLLEGE RECEIVES $4.4M GRANT TO BOOST ACCESS AND GRADUATION RATES, MEET EMPLOYER TALENT NEEDS

In April, the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Drives Degrees Community College Collaborative (D3C3) announced over $30 million in support from Ballmer Group and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. The initiative is a partnership with seven Southeast Michigan community colleges, including Schoolcraft College, to ensure students have equitable educational opportunities and graduate with high-value credentials or degrees that lead to good paying, in-demand jobs with local employers, boosting the Region’s overall prosperity.

Collaborative (D3C3) is a large-scale, strategic injection of investment in our regional community college system that has the potential to make meaningful and lasting change. We are thrilled to partner with the community college leaders, Ballmer Group, and the Detroit Regional Chamber to envision and officially launch D3C3.” D3C3 was developed out of the Chamber’s Detroit Regional Talent Compact, a 10-year equity-driven initiative to increase the Region’s postsecondary attainment rate to 60% and reduce the racial equity gap by half by 2030 – the same “60 by 30” goal later adopted by the State of Michigan.

FOUNDATION INCREASES SUPPORT FOR VISTATECH 2.0

SCHOOLCRAFT FACULTY AND STAFF HELP CHANGE LIVES

In March, the Schoolcraft College Foundation Board approved additional support for Vistatech 2.0, a 15,000-square-foot enhancement to the current Vistatech Center. The funding will not only enhance the student experience through expanded culinary classrooms, it also adds an Innovation Center, which can be used as a demonstration center for various programs from science to Culinary. An essential part of the area community, Vistatech Center will now have an expanded restaurant, Brew Pub, and market, making the Vistatech Center even more of a hub for the community. Look for the new space opening just in time for Fall 2023 classes!

The Foundation is thrilled to share that as of April 30th, 2023, Schoolcraft faculty and staff members have contributed over $63,000 this fiscal year! This is exciting as employee contributions surpassed last year’s total by $11,000! Schoolcraft faculty and staff are incredibly generous and go above and beyond their daily hard work to support our students and give them the best opportunity to succeed at Schoolcraft College! Throughout April, the Foundation held its annual Faculty & Staff Campaign featuring fun raffles and a Presidential Match from Dr. Cerny for gifts made during the month. The Campaign culminated in an ice cream social celebrating the generosity of all faculty and staff who give their time, talent, and treasure. More than 150 faculty and staff were served ice cream by Foundation staff and Foundation Board Member Stuart Baker. Many toppings were available – even root beer for root beer floats! Guests mingled and chatted while enjoying their ice cream creations and celebrating a fantastic opportunity to bring the Schoolcraft community together and celebrate all the ways we help Schoolcraft Students!

EXCITING SUPPORT FOR VETERANS & MILITARY SERVICE MEMBERS

As part of Vision 2025, the expansion of the Veteran’s Resource Center of Schoolcraft College, a Michigan Veterans Affairs Gold Level Veteran Friendly School, was one of the key areas in the case for support. The Veterans Center, located in the center of campus, is crucial in assisting our veterans and current military members to thrive on campus. Providing aid during the enrollment process by assisting with transcripts and other materials, as well as helping navigate all available VA benefits and scholarships. The existing space is being expanded and named the Mark L. Whitfield Veterans & Military Services Center , allowing more room for our men and women who give so much to our country. Mark graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served six years on active duty as well as a Navy Reservist and now a retired Commander.

In addition to Mark and Robin Whitfield’s support, the project has also received the following support: MASCO has provided a $150,000 grant for renovations to the space. This expansion will allow the College to expand services to Military members and families of Military members. This additional funding will enable the project to start in July 2023. An additional gift from Jim and Charlie Mahoney starts The Winom James & Charlotte Mahoney Veterans & Military Services Center Emergency Needs Fund as part of expanding services. This is the first emergency needs fund for veterans, military members, and their families at Schoolcraft.

BRAVING THE ELEMENTS: CULEX HEATS UP 2023!

The Icy winter storm the day before didn’t stop Schoolcraft supporters from attending the February 23rd Culinary Extravaganza (CulEx). Schoolcraft’s signature fundraising event was SOLD-OUT, and more than $90,000 (net) was raised for programs and student scholarships. This is up more than $25,000 over last year! More than 250 guests strolled the Schoolcraft kitchens and experienced the fabulous culinary delicacies prepared

and served by Schoolcraft Culinary students and chefs. The Schoolcraft Brewing and Distillation Program also opened the Brewery so guests could sample the award winning beers. Part of the DiPonio Room was transformed into a cool ‘Fire & Ice’ lounge with music and appetizers. Another evening highlight was the auction of American Harvest “buy-outs” for the 2023-2024 International Dinners.

ARWA’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING THIS YEAR’S FOUNDATION SCHOLAR

Arwa, a young woman from an immigrant family, has always dreamed of pursuing higher education. Her mother, who never had the opportunity to get an education, wished she had been taught to read and write in her Yemeni village, where girls rarely attended school. Despite facing the challenges of her father’s limited education and his demanding work as a seafarer, her mother was determined to ensure Arwa received an education. Arwa fondly remembered the long and challenging journeys she and her mother made, braving all types of weather to get her to school. When Arwa graduated high school, she became the first female in her family to achieve such a milestone. With unwavering determination, she enrolled at a university without a clear career path. Eventually, she transferred to Schoolcraft College during the COVID-19 pandemic after researching and talking to others about the outstanding nursing program. Arwa had always been fascinated by the medical field, accompanying her mother to hospitals and serving as her translator. After experiencing the critical difference it made as she started her own family, she decided to pursue sonography, a specialty that ignited her passion.

NEW DEI FELLOWS PROGRAM EXPANDS OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS The Scholars Taking Off Academically and Rising to Success (STARS) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Program has expanded to include a new DEI Fellows component.

Funded through a generous grant, DEI Fellows are selected through a competitive process and engage various College stakeholders in meaningful conversations and activities around topics of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice to support Schoolcraft’s mission of providing a transformational learning experience and to support the College’s value of diversity in students, staff, and programming. 2023 was the first year of DEI Fellows serving as integrated partners to the STARS program. The DEI Fellows work with the Office of Equity and Engagement,

the Stigma - Unseen Disabilities Workshop, and a historic first Juneteenth Community/Campus Wide event led by our STARS program students in collaboration with community organizations and multiple partners across campus. More than 250 guests across campus participated in the first set of events. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the DEI Fellows and STARS program are helping create pathways that lead to a better understanding of inclusion in today’s world.

FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS ARE NOW OPEN! This year the Schoolcraft College Foundation is happy to announce that we have 15 new funds and counting!

All the Foundation’s nearly 300 active funds support the students and programs of Schoolcraft College, and most of them are scholarships or awards that directly fund student studies. In 2022-2023, the Foundation awarded 435 students over $436,000 in scholarships and awards. We are excited to announce that we have officially completed a full year on the new ScholarshipUniverse (SU) platform! SU has been well received by our students for its easy-to-use dashboard and matching logic that allows them to see exactly what scholarships they are eligible to apply for. This year most of the Foundation’s private scholarships have been split into three rounds of awarding for Fall 2023.

This program’s goals are to support the College’s Strategic Plan Pillar of Equity & Engagement; increase campus awareness of topics related to DEI; provide a platform for students on strategies and initiatives that promote DEI; enhance leadership skills of STARS participants; and encourage student planning/input through DEI Fellow scholarship opportunities. THE SCHOOLCRAFT COLLEGE FOUNDATION ASSISTS ATHLETICS WITH ALUMNI EVENTS The Foundation has been working in tandem with the Athletics department to help promote alumni games for the baseball, softball, and basketball teams.

In January, legendary former women’s basketball coach, Karen Lafata, was honored and presented with a Tribute Plaque to commemorate her time with the Ocelots! Former players were in attendance to celebrate the occasion with their former coach! This spring, the baseball and softball teams also hosted

alumni events at their respective ballparks. Guests were treated to food and refreshments as they got to watch the new team of Ocelots take the field. We look forward to assisting athletics with future events, such as the annual Soccer Tailgate event coming this fall – watch for details!
